5-Year Celebration Recap

Students, faculty Board members, faithful supporters, and guests gathered at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 11th to celebrate the Athens College of Ministry’s fifth anniversary.  The college opened its doors in August 2012 to its first cohort of 7 students in answer to the call to fill an unmet need—to establish an accredited Christian post-secondary institution in the greater Athens area.  Last year the institution impacted forty different students through its certificate and degree program courses, and hundreds of others through its public-facing conferences, worship events, and service efforts.
The celebration was punctuated by a vocal recital by undergraduate Karla White, a Worship Arts major, graduation for two students, Faith Jennings and Pam Kovach, and a keynote message by Mr. Bob Maurer, former President and C.E.O. of Standard Coffee and Reily Foods. Mr. Maurer encouraged the ACMin community to not fail to trust in God in and for all things, and spoke of the importance of establishing “markers,” such as the 5-Year Anniversary celebration, as important for looking back on God’s faithfulness.

The college also used the occasion of the 5-Year anniversary to establish its first annual awards in honor of individuals who have served ACMin since its founding.  Its annual leadership award has been named the Wilson Lattimore Jr. Award for Exceptional Leadership.  Rev. Dr. Lattimore served as the first Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2012 – 2015.  The college’s annual service award has been named in honor of Dr. Mary Hammond for her incredible sacrifice of time, effort, and financial support to help found the institution.  Other award recipients included Mr. Josh Jones who received the first President’s Award for Faculty Excellence. Mrs. Cindy Mackey, the Director of the ACMin Transformational Prayer Ministry Center was the first recipient of the Mary S. Hammond Award for Outstanding Service. And Mr. Tim Savelle received the first Athens College of Ministry Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

Event attendees celebrated the tremendous milestones over the past year including achieving accreditation candidacy through the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools and acquiring 114 acres on Barnett Shoals Rd. in Oconee for the college’s permanent campus.  There was much praise and thanksgiving to God, through whom all things are possible!
