In the Valley

”Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4) Trials are confounding. They tempt you to question God’s faithfulness and character. If God loves me, why am I struggling with this sickness, sin, or confusing circumstance? Trials even reveal in us sins that we didn’t know we had. Is it not through hard times that our anger, selfishness, and distrust in God are revealed? All these things can be overwhelming, but this verse shows us another side of suffering. Paul may seem insensitive when he tells the Corinthian church to “count it all joy” in their suffering. That is not an easy task! But Paul knows that we can rejoice because our trials are DOING something in our lives.
John Piper talks of 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 saying “Not only is all of your affliction momentary, not only is all of your affliction light in comparison to eternity and the glory there, but all of it is totally meaningful.  Every millisecond of your pain from the fallen nature of man, every moment of your misery in the path of obedience is producing in you a peculiar glory that you will ‘get’ because of that.”

If we will allow it, God even means to use the trials and terrible things we go through to bring about good things for us! He desires that we be “perfect, lacking in nothing.” Suffering brothers & sisters – those who suffer now and those who will someday suffer – let your testing produce steadfastness in you. Have faith in God’s goodness and rejoice in trials. And if you know this to be true, that God is good even when life is hard, then share your testimony with those who are suffering as we walk in this world together.

Upcoming Bible Studies!

More Than a Conqueror

Paul writes in Romans 8:37 that the Christian is “MORE than a CONQUEROR" through every trial of life whether hard, humiliating, or humbling. Then why don't we feel strong and confident in the midst of difficulty? Why do we so often feel enslaved by sin? Join ACMin for More Than Conquerors, a 6-week Bible study about living in the victory and conquering power that is ours through the work of Christ on the cross. Register now to join us on Mondays from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM, October 12th - November 16th (6 weeks).

Post-abortive Women's Bible Study

Also starting soon is Forgiven & Set Free, a 9-week Bible study opportunity sharing God's restorative healing & hope for post-abortive women. Read more about this study coming up October 5, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

Student Spotlight: Alex Tucker

Lost & Found

Alex Tucker grew up playing the drums in metal bands. "The kind of bands you don't know what they're saying," said Tucker. "I used to spend 10 hours a day hammering away in my parents' garage." Tucker was saved when he was 17 after living most of his young life in a hard and selfish scene. "I'm not good at dabbling," said Tucker. "I knew if I was going to be a Christian I was called to minister, but all the ministers around where I was looked like Conway Twitty, so I ran the other way."

It wasn't until Tucker heard the testimony of freestyle motocross racer, Brian Deegan, that he finally decided to "give this Christian thing a real try. It was a selfish reason, really," said Tucker. "He had a cool reputation, and I hadn't seen a good paradigm for what ministering would look like for me until then. I had tried it my way and God told me it was time to try it His way." When Tucker relented to God's calling, things quickly fell into place. "Within a few months I had attented the Passion conference, I was enrolled at ACMin and Jason Dominey from Watkinsville First Baptist had offered me an internship."

"My mom tells story about a club that I started in First grade," said Tucker. "I don't even remember what it was about, but everyone followed me. Being a leader has never been hard for me. I used that later to lead people into the wrong stuff, but now I can use it to minister to kids and young people - really anyone who comes from a similar background."

At ACMin

"Dr. Dunn's Case Studies Course was so helpful," said Tucker who now ministers at New Song Church in Monroe, Georgia. "It was all about how you deal with it when real life stuff goes down," said Tucker. Dr. Dunn's class studied real life situations dealing with sin both inside the church and outside, applied God's Word to how you might handle the situations and even heard from the very leaders who had to walk through those different situations. "It gave me a good lens to go into ministry. I'm not going in with rose-colored glasses."

"I'm just here to share the gospel," said Tucker. "I will tell it to anyone who is willing to listen. My wife and I joke that every time we came up with a plan it failed. God's plan is going this good so far, so we're going to stick with that."

Alex Tucker is an undergraduate student at ACMin (since Spring 2013) pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Christian Ministry. Alex and his wife Lauren married earlier this year. They serve as Youth Leaders at New Song Church in Monroe, Georgia. Alex grew up in Dalton, Georgia with his mom, dad and older brother.

ACMin Students Find Jesus in Jewish Feasts

Professor Millier's Old Testament Survey and Hebrew students along with other ACMin faculty met at Chabad@UGA with Rabbi Michoel Reffen (right) to discuss their first class projects, a study of the 3 fall Jewish feast. Rabbi Reffen shared Jewish traditions around the feast of Sukkot or Festival of Booths, a joyful harvest festival. During Sukkot, Jewish families build temporary shelters or "tents."  The class met with the Rabbi under such a shelter on Lumpkin Street.
